Theta roles are invented by linguists for their own purposes, and not something that can be determined objectively. Consequently there are as many different concepts of "theta role" as there are linguists using it, and probly even more habits of assigning them to various types of constituents. So you should ask your teacher, if you have one, exactly how they describe them, and how they would assign them. If you're trying to teach yourself from a syntax text, you've got the wrong one. | |
