Mar 21, 2017 at 13:24 comment added Araucaria - him @jknappen I provided support for the arguments presented by grammars such as CamGEL and by myself in my answer. It would be good if you could provide a similarly supported answer. H&P argue that the traditional view is indefensible - and I have never seen it defended in relation to such arguments/observations. Perhaps you know of some such published defense?
Mar 21, 2017 at 13:16 comment added Sir Cornflakes This is not the place for a discussion, another point of view can be presented in another answer. BTW, disagreement with a point of view is not necessarily a reason for a downvote, as long as the point of view can be defended. Presenting one point of view as the only truth maybe a better reason for downvote, though.
Mar 21, 2017 at 12:03 comment added Araucaria - him @jknappen It's the one that was quoted in order to be refuted! (and obviously represents a second view that one might hold). If you feel that the criticisms of that view are unfair or inaccurate for some reason, then a comment explaining why would be a reasonable comment. As it stands your comment and downvote could reasonably be interpreted as indicating that you subscribe to the view being discussed and that you don't like it being academically critiqued. (Although I do appreciate that you left a comment)
Mar 21, 2017 at 11:12 comment added Sir Cornflakes Where is a second opinion (except for being quoted in order to be refuted)?
Mar 21, 2017 at 10:35 comment added Araucaria - him @jknappen Which of the two opinions discussed is only one opinion one can have on the gerund?
Mar 21, 2017 at 10:14 comment added Sir Cornflakes This is just one opinion one can have on the gerund.
