I think the idea of introducing new information could still be argued for, though. For instance, 'Behind the president, there was a statue dedicated to lost sailors' is fine, but 'Behind the president, there was the statue dedicated to lost sailors' is off again. Perhaps because the VP exists as an entity anyway, such that we can use a direct article, he doesn't qualify as a 'new' piece of information. | |
