The Linguistic Data Consortium often sell data sets for a high price.
According to the Linguistic Data Consortium Wikipedia page
The LDC was founded in 1992 with a grant from the Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and is partly supported by grant IRI-9528587 from the Information and Intelligent Systems division of the National Science Foundation.
so it sounds like most / all of its funding comes from the tax payers. Why doesn't the Linguistic Data Consortium release its data sets free of charge?
